Getting Started witha Combination Wave Generator

Combination wave/surge generators are typically benchtop, but heavy equipment. Testing on data and three phase power lines require additional coupling/decoupling networks. Pre programmed test sequences for surge immunity allows you to begin testing once coupling in your EUT and properly grounding the test setup.

Electrical Fast Transient (EFT)/Burst generators are required for conducted immunity testing standards, such as IEC/EN 61000-4-4.  Electrical Fast Transient EFT/Burst events are small electrical surges caused by a local source, typically an electrical switch, it can occur within a product itself as well as from the data or power lines in the facility.

  • Surge & Burst/EFT Generators

Conducted immunity testing is a major requirement to attain CE marking for products. Multiple types of electrical disturbances are required to be tested and certified to pass the internal compliance standards, EFT/Burst standard EN/IEC 61000-4-4 and Surge (combo wave) standard IEC/EN 61000-4-5 are available in most standard EMI test sets made today. The EMC Shop stocks all types of Surge & Burst/EFT Generators for compliance and pre-compliance testing. Rent or buySurge & Burst/EFT Generators for individual tests or multifunction generators to complete an assortment of tests in a compact solution. Most systems can be easily upgraded to include additional tests as required.

Transient generators are typically benchtop, but heavy equipment. When doing testing on three phase power lines systems usually require much larger coupling/decoupling networks which substantially increase system size. EM test environments with ground planes with connections to earth are required to safely use transient generators.

    Common Transient Tests

    Combination Wave/Surge:

    • IEC/EN 61000-4-5 specifies two Combination Wave pulses: Open Circuit Voltage Short Circuit Current
    • A common combination wave test is the 1.2/50 & 8/20
    • Another common wave test is the 10/700 & 5/320, or otherwise known as telecom wave
    • The four standard test levels , excluded of EUT: 0.5, 1, 2, 4 kV (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 kA)

    Burst/EFT:

    • A typical burst has a single pulse rise time/duration of 5 ns/50 ns from a source impedance of 50 Ω
    • Bursts of 15 ms duration with a repetition rate of 5 kHz (or 100 kHz) are applied every 300 ms
    • The standard defines four basic test levels, all with repetition frequencies 5 or 100 kHz
    • The level voltage depends on equipment being tested:
    • Power ports: 0.5 , 1, 2, 4 kV
    • Signal and control ports: 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 kV

  • Surge, Burst/EFT, Ring Wave, Dips & Interrupts

Accomplish all common conducted immunity testing to conform with EMC (electromagnetic compliance) standards for CE marking in one multi-purpose instrument. Generate electrical disturbances for Surge (Combination wave pulse 1.2/50 - 8/20 μs), Burst/EFT (5/50 ns), and Ringwave (0.5 μs/100 kHz) as well as pass power quality compliance standards by simulating AC dips, drops, and interruptions. The EMC Shop stocks all types of multifunction generators for compliance and pre-compliance testing. Rent or buy generators for individual tests or multifunction generators to complete an assortment of tests in a compact solution. Most systems can be easily upgraded to include additional tests as required.
