Coupling Decoupling Networks (CDN's)

The EMC Shop stocks coupling decoupling networks (CDN's) for most power and data line configurations. CDN's are quintessential for performing EMC testing. In short, conducted immunity coupling networks ensure electrical transients are sent down the path of the line to the EUT. Decoupling that signal from entering the rest of the network is done in different ways. In radiated immunity, you are coupling wireless signals over the air through the antenna. It may be appropriate to use a decoupling clamp on lines as they exit the test chamber.

Coupling/Decoupling networks are built in to most current generators for single phase power EUT. Coupling networks are typically easy to set up for conducted immunity (surge, EFT, PQF). RF conduted immunity requires an assortment of couplers and without proper setup, are easy to blow up.

Type's of Coupling Decoupling Networks

  • CDN's for Surge/EFT Immunity: Power Lines and Data Lines
  • RF CDN's for Conducted Immunity: Power Lines and Data Lines: Used for just decoupling as well
  • EM Clamps: Inject and decouple RF disturbances
  • Absorbing Clamps: Just for decoupling RF disturbances on cables (Needed for BCI Testing)
  • Bulk Current Injection Probes: Used for just coupling RF noise

Coupling Decoupling Networks (CDN's) - The EMC Shop

Coupling/decoupling networks for RF conducted immunity have a port top-side where your inject the RF signal, an EUT side where the RF disturbances are directed to power or data lines. The decoupling path exit the AE Side and is generally safe from disturbances.

  • RF Power Line CDN's

The EMC Shop stocks power line coupling decoupling networks for RF conducted immunity testing. The distubance signals are coupled to each conductor in the supply lines according to EN IEC 61000-4-6 standard. The standard M series CDNs have a current rating of 25 Amps. CDNs are available for power supplies from 1 to 5 conductors.

EM Injection clamps are used to inject a known level of RF signal onto the cabling of EUT at a test frequency and verify the EUT still performs accordingly.

    Standards Using EM Injection Clamps

    • IEC 61000-4-6: international standard for most commercial electornics
    • IEC 60533: EMC for ships with a metallic hull
    • CISPR 24: Immunity requirements for information technology equipment (ITE)
    • IEC 60601-1-2: EMC requirements for medical equipment
    • IEC 61326-1: Immuniy and emissions for electrical equipment

  • EM Absorbing Clamps

Capacitive coupling/absorbing clamps are used for measuring interference signals on power supply cables. Decoupling clamps and ferrite tube are available for a variety of different EMC applications.

  • Surge/EFT/PQF 3-Phase CDN's

For large commercial products requiring three phase power at 240V, 480V or 600V. An additional CDN will required with the transient generators to complete IEC 61000-4-4, IEC 61000-4-5ANSI C62.45 and other conducted immunity testing. The EMC Shop stocks 3 Phase coupling/decoupling networks for rental or purchase.

  • EFT Coupling Clamps

Capacitive coupling clamps are primarily used to inject fast transient and burst interference pulses into signal and data cables, i.e. into any type of connection to peripheral equipment. The IEC standard 61000-4-4 Ed. 3 also allows the capacitive coupling method to be used for pulse injection into ac and dc power lines when no appropriate decoupling network is available. The coupling capacitance (typically 100pF) between the coupling clamp and the cable inserted depends on the cable type, the diameter and other factors like screening, etc.
